Nigerians have taken to social media to express frustration over a sudden increase in mobile data tariffs by major telecom operators. The price adjustment, which took effect overnight, has led to widespread complaints, with several telcos trending online as subscribers voice their displeasure.
Users lament that data plans previously priced at ₦2,000 for 15GB now cost as much as ₦6,000, representing a drastic hike that many say is unjustifiable given the current economic hardship.
Regulatory Approval and Tariff Hike Concerns
In January 2025, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) granted telecom operators approval to adjust their tariffs after sustained demands for cost-reflective pricing. However, the regulator capped the increase at a maximum of 50% of existing prices—far lower than the over 100% hike requested by some network providers.
Despite this regulatory limit, recent price adjustments suggest that some tariffs may have exceeded the approved threshold. This has sparked concerns that telecom companies are implementing higher-than-authorized increases, worsening the financial strain on consumers.
Public Outcry Over Rising Cost of Living
The data tariff hike comes amid rising inflation and economic difficulties, compounding the frustration of Nigerians already struggling with high living costs. Many social media users criticized the development, calling on the government and regulatory agencies to intervene and protect consumers from excessive charges.
