In anticipation of the general election of 2027, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, former governor of Zamfara State Abdullaziz Yari, and senator Abdul Ningi have started the process of forming a megaparty.
Remember when President Bola Tinubu defeated Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) 2023 presidential candidate?
Yari also lost to Tinubu’s favourite, Godswill Akpabio, in his race for Senate President.
Sources claim that Atiku, along with a few National Assembly members, has initiated the formation of the prospective mega party.
According to information obtained, Atiku’s team is concerned about the PDP’s division and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s unduly strong hold over the opposition party.
According to the source, Atiku and his supporters are considering a reenactment of the 2013 event, which saw the creation of a megaparty through the merger of Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Muhammadu Buhari’s Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and a section of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
“They made a lot of progress with the setup. They decided to create a large party to unseat Tinubu because they think the nation is currently experiencing a similar circumstance to that of the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan administration in 2014, the source added.
One of the actions taken by the megaparty’s promoters was Ningi’s remarks on the BBC Hausa Service. Their aim is to cause discord in the National Assembly and pit legislators against the President.

According to a different senator, there is a new scheme to topple Tinubu’s administration and transfer control back to the north in 2027.
We are aware of their strategy. We have them under observation. Since then, we have gone back to using our political toolkit to block any attempt to sow discord between the Executive and the Senate and topple the administration,” the senator stated, requesting anonymity.
We do not, in fact, criticise the government as the opposition is meant to do. However, the circumstances and our current administration are to blame for this. We did not elect these so-called leaders that they imposed upon us.
“They introduced topics related to religion, ethnicity, and tribe into the proceedings. They spread misinformation by claiming that there would be no peace and that no Hausa or Fulani would be trusted to head the opposition.
Looking at it this way, most of the people who are against it are from the Northeast and the Northwest. However, we were denied the privilege of leading the Senate opposition.
