Fan Violence Erupts as Barau FC Player Attacked During NPFL Match in Katsina

KATSINA — Nigeria News Today: Fresh tension rocked the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Saturday after home fans of Katsina United reportedly attacked a Barau FC player, Nana Abraham, during a heated encounter at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.

Chaos as Equaliser Sparks Violence

The incident occurred moments after Barau FC’s Orji Kalu scored a 69th-minute equaliser to make it 1-1, provoking some angry home supporters who invaded the pitch. Witnesses told The Bureau News that the match was halted briefly as security personnel struggled to control the chaos.

Barau FC confirmed the attack via its official X handle, writing: “70’ The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”

A disturbing image obtained by SaharaReporters showed Abraham bleeding from a neck wound as teammates and officials rushed to his aid.

League Yet to Respond

As of press time, neither Katsina United nor the NPFL management had issued an official statement on the incident. The attack has reignited national outrage over poor crowd control and fan violence in Nigerian football stadiums.

Sports analysts told The Bureau News that decisive sanctions are needed to deter hooliganism and protect players’ safety. “This is becoming one too many,” said one Abuja-based analyst. “The league must act fast before tragedy strikes.”

Recent Pattern of Violence

The Katsina incident follows the Kano Pillars vs. Shooting Stars (3SC) clash in October at the Sani Abacha Stadium, where fans stormed the pitch and assaulted match officials. The NPFL later fined Pillars ₦9.5 million, deducted three points, and ordered indefinite closure of the stadium for security breaches.
