The Federal Government of Nigeria and the governors of the 36 states have reached a consensus on the establishment of state police to strengthen security measures throughout the nation.
This decision was a key point in the discussions held on Thursday between President Bola Tinubu and the state governors at the State House in Abuja.
Idris Mohammed, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, briefed journalists on the meeting’s outcomes, highlighting the recognition of security improvements nationwide. The discussions included plans to increase the number of forest rangers and to consider the establishment of State Police.
Mohammed mentioned that further dialogue will take place between the federal government and the states on this matter before a proposal is submitted to the National Assembly for the necessary constitutional amendments to enable state police.
Regarding the food crisis, the Minister, alongside the Governors of Plateau, Kaduna, and Delta states, revealed that the National Security Adviser, the Director General of State Services, and the Inspector General of Police have been instructed to work with the state governors to address issues of hoarding, especially amid rising commodity prices.
The meeting also underscored the importance of boosting investment in agriculture to alleviate food shortages. It declared an end to food importation to enhance Nigeria’s self-reliance and its potential to become a net exporter of food.
