Scientists Identify Health Risks Linked to Problematic Pornography Use

A new study has revealed that individuals who regularly watch pornography and attempt to quit suddenly may experience withdrawal-like symptoms similar to those seen in drug addicts. Researchers from Universidade Federal do Paraná in Brazil discovered that problematic pornography use (PPU), a form of compulsive sexual behavior disorder, can lead to physical health issues when individuals stop abruptly.

PPU, often referred to as porn addiction, is characterized by compulsive porn-watching that disrupts everyday life, including relationships, mental health, and responsibilities. It has already been associated with conditions like erectile dysfunction, depression, and anxiety. However, this latest research highlights that those attempting to “go cold turkey” may also suffer from physical withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, chills, nausea, and sleep disturbances.

In a review of 14 studies, the researchers found that 72% of people with PPU experienced withdrawal symptoms, including cravings, heightened emotions, difficulties focusing, and nervousness. Approximately one in 20 participants reported more severe symptoms such as sweating, chills, and sickness.

These withdrawal symptoms are believed to be linked to dopamine, the brain’s pleasure-related chemical. Watching pornography triggers dopamine release, and frequent viewing leads to a cycle of craving more porn. When someone tries to quit, their brain’s chemical balance, particularly with dynorphin (which counteracts dopamine), becomes disrupted, leading to withdrawal-like symptoms.

With the rise of internet pornography consumption, particularly among young people, researchers are calling for more studies to better understand the onset, duration, and characteristics of these symptoms. The UK ranks second globally for internet pornography searches, with a significant portion of young people regularly exposed to it, often starting at an early age.

This research emphasizes the need for more awareness and potential support for individuals struggling with PPU and the effects of quitting suddenly.
