The Nigerian Senate has initiated a crucial review of the Ochanya Ogbanje case. This development marks a significant step toward securing justice for the 13-year-old schoolgirl whose 2018 death sparked national outrage over alleged prolonged sexual abuse.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan representing Kogi Central brought the petition forward during November 26 2025 plenary. The legal document filed by Inibehe Effiong Chambers demands legislative intervention to reopen the stalled case.
The petition calls for immediate arrest and prosecution of fleeing prime suspect Victor Ogbuja. It also urges Benue State Government to officially challenge the judgment that acquitted his father Andrew Ogbuja.
Case details reveal harrowing circumstances surrounding Ochanya’s death. The young girl had lived with the Ogbuja family in Benue State since age five. She suffered repeated rape allegedly perpetrated by both father and son. Severe health complications from the abuse led to her death on October 17 2018.
Despite widespread public outrage the petition accuses Nigeria Police Force of failing to rearrest Victor Ogbuja after he absconded. It further criticizes Benue State Government for refusing to appeal the High Court ruling that freed Andrew Ogbuja citing insufficient evidence.
