A tragic incident occurred at a checkpoint in Kogi State, where a police constable allegedly stabbed Mr. J. Akpa, a traveller, to death during an argument. The victim, reportedly en route to Enugu State from Ugwolawo after the holidays, succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that Mr. Akpa, who was travelling on a motorcycle, encountered the police constable at the Odolu Division checkpoint. An argument ensued, during which the officer allegedly drew a long knife and stabbed Mr. Ademu in the chest. The knife reportedly pierced through his chest and exited from his back.
Despite swift efforts to save his life, Mr. Ademu passed away at a nearby hospital.
The police constable involved in the incident has since been arrested and detained. The motive for the altercation remains unclear, but the tragic event has sparked outrage among residents and travellers along the Kogi-Enugu route.
Efforts by The Bureau Newspaper to reach the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the Idah area for comments proved unsuccessful, as his phone lines were unreachable.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over police brutality and the misuse of power in Nigeria. The public has called on the authorities to ensure justice for the deceased and his family.
