JNI Urges Plateau Governor to Reconsider Appointment of SSA on Indigenous Muslims

Jos, Plateau State – The Plateau State chapter of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has voiced its opposition to Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s recent appointment of Jamila Pam as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Indigenous Muslims. The Islamic organization, led by its President-General and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji (Dr.) Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, called for a more inclusive approach to such appointments.

In a statement released on Sunday, JNI Secretary Salim Umar referenced Surah Al-Hujurat (Chapter 49 of the Quran) as a guiding principle that appears to conflict with the appointment. Umar emphasized that the position, as it currently stands, may not be widely accepted by the Muslim community in Plateau State.

The JNI highlighted the importance of inclusivity, suggesting that the role of Senior Special Assistant on Islamic Affairs would be more appropriate, as it would represent all Muslims in the state, rather than limiting the position to Indigenous Muslims alone. The organization believes that this broader approach would foster a sense of belonging among the entire Muslim population in Plateau.

“We consider this appointment of an SSA to ‘indigenous Muslims’ as not well thought out, because in Islam, any social stratification that is not embedded in the teaching of Islam is frowned at,” the statement read. The organization quoted Qur’an 49:13, which emphasizes unity among all Muslims regardless of social or tribal distinctions.

The JNI acknowledged that the Plateau State Government has the authority to appoint individuals to positions of responsibility. However, they stressed the importance of addressing concerns within the Muslim community regarding this particular appointment. The organization urged the government to reconsider its decision to ensure that all Muslims in the state feel included and represented.
