Malia Obama, the daughter of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, went by “Malia Ann” when she made her directorial debut at the Sundance Film Festival with her film “The Heart.”

Born on July 4, 1998, Malia Obama currently goes by Malia Ann.

Her paternal grandmother, who passed away from ovarian cancer in 1995 at the age of 52, is honored by the use of her middle name.

Malia plans to pursue a career in screenwriting after graduating from Harvard University’s esteemed Visual and Environmental Studies program.

Malia authored the screenplay and directed her own film, “The Heart.” It was written under Malia Ann, her new name.

Early in February 2024, the film made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival.

Malia made her screenwriting debut in 2021 as a member of the writing team for the Amazon Prime series “Swarm.” “Swarm,” which featured Billie Eilish and Rory Culkin, was a solid beginning for her career.
