In the latest incident, a notorious terrorist commander identified as Dangata Abba released a disturbing video showing himself and his heavily armed gang displaying stacks of cash allegedly obtained as ransom from abducted victims. The clip, verified by Sahara Reporters, has since gone viral across multiple platforms.
The video, which surfaced this week, has garnered over 600,000 views and thousands of reactions online. Analysts told The Bureau News that such brazen acts highlight the continued weakness of intelligence operations and underscore the expanding influence of rural terrorist networks across northern Nigeria.
Mockery of Security Efforts
The footage, shared on social media, shows Abba and his gang members holding rifles and chanting, surrounded by wads of naira notes. The terrorist leader bragged about the money collected from victims’ families and taunted the government for failing to stop them, even after multiple military offensives in affected states.
Security analysts warn that the recurring display of ransom cash could embolden other criminal networks and damage public trust in the state’s ability to protect its citizens. Recent intelligence reports by Reuters Africa have also revealed growing cooperation among local gangs, transnational arms smugglers, and extremist factions operating across Nigeria’s northwest corridor.
Digital Propaganda and TikTok Exploitation
This is not the first time terrorists have used social media to showcase their activities. In July 2025, Sahara Reporters documented a case where a terrorist in Kwara State hijacked the TikTok account of a kidnapped Point of Sale (POS) operator known as Yman. The terrorist used the victim’s account to post videos from his forest hideout, taunting the public and security agencies.
Investigations later revealed that Yman was abducted alongside several others across communities in Kwara North. His captors used his WhatsApp account to negotiate ransom payments, sending horrifying updates to family members — a growing trend in Nigeria’s digital-era criminal networks.

Experts interviewed by The Bureau News believe that the convergence of kidnapping, cyber fraud, and terrorism presents a new frontier of national insecurity. While the Nigerian government has repeatedly pledged to end the scourge, visible results remain limited on the ground.
