The Bureau News reports that hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs broke down in tears as his six children delivered emotional statements at his sentencing hearing in a Manhattan courtroom on Friday. The 55-year-old producer faces up to 20 years in prison following his July 2 conviction for transporting individuals to engage in prostitution.
According to CNN and Reuters coverage of the trial, Combs became visibly emotional as his children Quincy, Justin, Christian, Chance, Jessie and D’Lila pleaded for their father’s release. His daughter D’Lila tearfully told the judge, “Please, your honor, give our family the chance to heal together and move forward.”
Combs sobbed as his lawyers played a 12-minute documentary video showing moments of his past charity work and family life. Although prosecutors described the act as a publicity stunt, defense attorneys argued that it reflected his remorse and community contribution. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik countered that Combs had shown “no genuine remorse” and even scheduled public appearances before sentencing — what she called “the height of hubris.”
Defense Pleads for Short Sentence
Defense counsel Marc Agnifilo and Brian Steel urged the judge to impose a lighter sentence of just 14 months, citing Combs’ diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and long-term drug addiction. They argued that his crimes stemmed from untreated trauma and substance abuse rather than malicious intent.
Steel told the court that Combs has “lost his global business, his reputation, and the trust of those he loves” but now seeks to rebuild his life. He added that Combs planned to relocate to Miami to care for his elderly mother and share his incarceration experiences through teaching engagements aimed at youth rehabilitation.
Prosecution Pushes for Accountability
Prosecutor Christy Slavik maintained that Combs’ lack of remorse warranted at least 11 years in prison, even though the maximum sentence is 20 years. The government’s position emphasized accountability for exploiting vulnerable individuals during his so-called “drug-fueled sex marathons.”
Emotional Appeals in Court
Among those who testified for leniency was Miami pastor Reverend Gary Johnson, who told the court that Combs’ release would better serve rehabilitation efforts. “Sean needs an opportunity,” Johnson said, “and we won’t let you down.”
