Firefighters and emergency teams searched the rubble for hours, ensuring no one was trapped. Although apartments were not directly damaged, some residents were evacuated as a precaution. Gas services to the building have been cut off while investigators determine whether a gas leak was responsible. Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that ConEd, the local utility provider, is assisting in the probe.

Building Violations Under Scrutiny

The building, part of a public housing development managed by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), already faced several violations. Records show a partial stop-work order was issued in June over plumbing problems. Additional violations include failure to file facade safety reports and unsafe facade conditions flagged by inspectors. NYC’s Buildings Commissioner James Oddo said there are three unresolved issues involving the property’s boilers, though it remains unclear if they are related to the collapse.

Recent Fire at the Same Building

This collapse comes only a week after a fire in the same building left a teenage girl in critical condition. Her father later told News 12 Long Island that she is recovering. Local Assembly member Amanda Septimo said at a press briefing that “luck prevented this incident from becoming a tragedy,” but warned that safety cannot depend on luck alone.
