The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of passengers traveling in a state-owned Edo Line bus and a private vehicle along the Benin-Lagos highway.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Joel Yamu, said the incident occurred on Friday, September 5, 2025, when a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number EDO 14 B03 ED, conveying passengers from Auchi to Benin, and a Toyota Camry with registration number KJA 833 HR, were ambushed by armed men between Odemwingie and Obanrenren communities.

According to Yamu, the attackers shot sporadically into the air before forcefully taking some passengers into the nearby bush.

“The Command immediately deployed the Divisional Police Officer of Ekiadolor, tactical teams, vigilantes, and hunters who embarked on a massive bush-combing operation. Sixteen (16) victims were rescued unhurt, while efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of the remaining abducted passengers and apprehend the perpetrators,” he said.

The PPRO assured the public of the police command’s commitment to safety and security, noting that the recently introduced Community Safety Partnership Initiative by Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika is aimed at strengthening collaboration between security agencies and local communities in addressing challenges of insecurity across Edo State.

Residents and travelers have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as operations continue.
