Kebbi Orders Immediate Closure of Schools Amid Rising Security Threats

Nigeria News Today — The Kebbi State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all public and private secondary schools, as well as several tertiary institutions, following recent security concerns across the state. The directive was contained in a joint statement issued by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Alhaji Isa Abubakar Tunga, and the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Halima Bande, in Birnin Kebbi.
According to the statement, the closure became necessary after fresh attacks in parts of Kebbi State raised fears of possible school-targeted violence — an issue that has increasingly drawn attention from national and international observers, including reports from Reuters on rising insecurity in northern Nigeria.
Institutions affected by the closure
The state government listed the tertiary institutions affected by the shutdown to include:
- Kebbi State Polytechnic, Dakingari
- Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero
- College of Health Sciences and Technology, Jega
- Adamu Augie College of Education, Argungu
- School of Remedial Studies, Yauri
The statement clarified that the College of Nursing Sciences and Midwifery, Birnin Kebbi, remains open and will not be affected by the shutdown due to its essential role in ongoing medical services.
Government appeals for calm
The commissioners urged all school administrators to comply immediately and assured residents that the government is working with security agencies to stabilize the affected areas. They emphasized that a new resumption date would be announced once safety is guaranteed.
“The security situation requires urgent measures. A new resumption date will be communicated in due course,” the statement read.
The decision follows recent incidents in the region, which analysts say mirror similar school-targeted security breaches previously reported by global outlets such as BBC Africa. Kebbi authorities say the move is preventive and aimed at safeguarding students across the state.
