The Kebbi State Government has strengthened security around the ongoing Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway with the donation of 10 brand-new Toyota Hilux vehicles, The Bureau News reports.
The vehicles were officially handed over on Thursday to the Minister of State for Works, Barrister Muhammad Bello Goronyo, during a brief ceremony at Government House, Birnin Kebbi.
Governor Idris: “No Meaningful Development Thrives Without Security”
Governor Nasir Idris said the gesture aligns with his administration’s commitment to ensuring the unhindered progress of the landmark infrastructure project. Kebbi State accounts for about 258 kilometres of the dual-lane highway, where construction activities are reportedly advancing steadily.
“No meaningful development can thrive without security,” Governor Idris said, noting that the vehicles will help protect workers, equipment and communities along the busy construction corridor.
The Governor stressed that the super highway will boost trade, expand farming activity, enhance transportation and improve commercial exchanges within Kebbi and neighbouring states. He reaffirmed Kebbi’s strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope infrastructure agenda.
Minister Goronyo Commends Kebbi’s Partnership
In his remarks, Minister of State for Works, Barrister Goronyo, commended Governor Idris for “a promise fulfilled” and described the donation as a clear demonstration of partnership between the state and the Federal Government.
According to the Minister, work on the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway has advanced significantly:
- 64 km already cleared
- Over 30 km filled
- 4 km of concrete dual-lane pavement completed
- 5 km of solar streetlights installed (all within Kebbi)
Highway to Open Major Economic Corridors
Goronyo stated that the 168-km highway will connect multiple northern and southern states, linking with the ongoing coastal highway project from Badagry to Calabar. He said the combined network will expand economic opportunities, improve mobility and support national integration.
He also listed upcoming installations along the route, which include:
- Police stations
- CCTV cameras
- Boreholes at 5-km intervals
- Solar streetlights
- Schools and medical centres
He concluded by expressing the Federal Government’s gratitude on behalf of the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, noting that the vehicles would be put to proper use.
