Senator Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila Assaulted at Emir of Kano’s Daughter’s Wedding
Senator Sulaiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, was reportedly assaulted on Friday during the wedding ceremony of Amina Muhammad Sanusi, daughter of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Lamido Sanusi.
A viral video captured the incident, showing an elderly man attempting to hit the senator with his shoe. The man, visibly angry, accused Sumaila of abandoning Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, to align with President Bola Tinubu.
Sumaila, who was elected under the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), had to be shielded by Governor Abba Yusuf, who intervened to calm the situation and prevent further escalation.
The altercation highlights growing tensions within the Kwankwasiyya Movement, as members have recently criticized Sumaila for allegedly forging ties with President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC). In his defense, the senator stated that it was Kwankwaso who initially facilitated the relationship between Kano’s federal lawmakers and the APC.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions, with many condemning the act of violence while others express concerns over the deepening political rifts within the state.
