The 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has announced the cancellation of this year’s Eid-el-Fitr Durbar celebration, citing security concerns as the primary reason for suspending the annual event. The decision comes amid rising tensions within the Kano Emirate, where a lingering leadership dispute has divided the region’s traditional institutions.
Speaking at a press briefing from the Nasarawa Mini Palace in Kano, Emir Bayero emphasized that maintaining peace and stability among the people was far more important than holding the grand cultural festival, which traditionally follows the end of Ramadan.
“The peaceful coexistence of our people is more paramount than the Durbar celebration,” the Emir stated, adding that he reached the decision after extensive consultations with Islamic scholars, elders, stakeholders, and his council members.
Security Risks and Emirate Tensions
The cancellation comes amid heightened concerns over potential unrest in the state, especially as the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, was reportedly planning a similar Durbar event.
Sources indicate that Bayero had earlier written to the Nigeria Police Force, notifying them of his intention to hold the festival. However, security agencies reportedly raised concerns over possible clashes between supporters of the two traditional rulers, prompting calls for caution.
The Kano Emirate has been at the center of a leadership crisis following the deposition of Emir Sanusi II in 2020 and the subsequent installation of Aminu Ado Bayero by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. Sanusi’s removal was widely seen as politically motivated, as he was a vocal critic of the previous administration. Despite his ouster, Sanusi still commands significant influence within Kano, with a strong base of loyalists who continue to challenge the legitimacy of Emir Bayero’s reign.
A Symbolic Celebration Put on Hold
The Eid-el-Fitr Durbar is one of the most revered cultural and religious celebrations in Northern Nigeria. The festival, which involves a grand display of traditional horse riding, music, and royal processions, attracts thousands of spectators, including dignitaries and tourists.
By suspending this year’s Durbar, Emir Bayero is signaling an effort to de-escalate tensions and prioritize stability in the region. However, analysts warn that the ongoing power struggle within the Kano Emirate remains unresolved, and the rivalry between the two factions could lead to further political and social unrest.
As Kano residents prepare to mark Eid-el-Fitr, all eyes will be on how both camps navigate the delicate situation, as well as the role of the state government in ensuring peace in the historic emirate.
