Varadkar, the Indian Prime Minister, has announced his resignation due to “personal, political reasons.”
Leo Varadkar, the prime minister of Ireland, has said that he will abdicate as soon as a replacement is selected.
In addition to resigning immediately as leader of the Fine Gael Party, a component of Ireland’s coalition government, Varadkar made the announcement of his resignation on Wednesday outside government headquarters in Dublin.
Following a struggle for the Party leadership, he will be removed as prime minister.
Varadkar gave the Associated Press an explanation for his decision that was “both personal and political.”
“In June 2017, when I was appointed Prime Minister and Leader of the Party, I realized that part of being a leader is having the guts to hand over the reins to someone else when the time comes. Now is the moment.”
“I am resigning as President and leader of Fine Gael effective today and will resign as the Taoiseach as soon as my successor is able to take up that office.”
“I’m proud that we have made the country a more equal and more modern place,” stated the president.
The 45-year-old Varadkar served as prime minister twice: once from December 2022 to December 2020.
When he was first elected, he was the youngest leader in the nation’s history and the first out gay prime minister of Ireland.
