Following the killing of a 27-year-old man during a land dispute in Bwari, Abuja, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern directive banning police officers from acting as enforcers in land disputes and land-grabbing battles.
Speaking at the Strategic Police Officers Conference, the IGP declared that such deployments are now prohibited, stressing that the police must never be used as tools by powerful individuals in land tussles.
Egbetokun also rolled out fresh Ember Months security measures, warning officers that Nigerians must always see protection, not persecution, whenever police personnel arrive at any scene.
“From now on, no officer should allow himself to be used as a hired hand in land disputes. The Nigeria Police will not be associated with land-grabbing wars,” the IGP emphasized.
The new directive is expected to restore confidence among citizens, many of whom have long accused police officers of colluding with land grabbers and fueling violent disputes across Abuja and other parts of the country.
