The Chairman of the 10th House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Benjamin Kalu, has assured Nigerians that the ongoing constitutional review will produce a people-oriented document that truly reflects the aspirations of the citizens.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of a two-day retreat for committee members in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Kalu, who also serves as the Deputy Speaker of the House, commended members for their dedication and urged them to remain steadfast in their efforts.
“We are so proud of you. On behalf of the Speaker and the leadership of the National Assembly, we found you worthy to be members of this committee, and you have not failed us,” Kalu stated.
He emphasized the urgency of the exercise, noting that the committee aims to complete the first phase before the next election cycle.
“With the team spirit and dedication we have exhibited, it is clear that we are on the right track. We believe Nigeria can be better than we met it, and we are committed to ensuring the voices of the people are heard in this process,” he added.
A Vision for a Better Nigeria
Kalu described committee members as architects of Nigeria’s future, stressing that their work will shape a constitution that genuinely represents the people’s will.
“You are the cooks in the kitchen, baking the best Nigeria that will be better than the one we have ever seen. There may be challenges, but your dedication and determination will lead to greater heights,” he said.
He called for sustained teamwork beyond the retreat, urging members to remain partners in progress in achieving the dream of a better Nigeria.
Commitment to an Inclusive and Transparent Process
Speaking at the event, Akin Rotimi Jnr, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, reiterated the commitment of the committee to an inclusive, transparent, and citizen-driven review process.
“The constitutional review process is a complex and delicate undertaking that demands expertise, wisdom, and engagement with diverse stakeholders across ethnic, religious, and political lines,” Rotimi said.
He assured Nigerians that under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the committee will deliver meaningful reforms that strengthen democracy and foster national development.
