Lokoja, Kogi State – The management of the Federal University, Lokoja (FUL), has announced the indefinite closure of the institution following student protests over the tragic deaths of five colleagues in a road accident.
In a statement released on Thursday by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, the university cited security concerns and the need to prevent further disruptions as reasons for the shutdown.
The crisis erupted after a fatal accident on Monday, February 17, 2025, in Felele, where five students lost their lives. In response, students barricaded the university’s main gate, disrupting academic and administrative activities.
Despite appeals from the Kogi State Government and university management, the protests persisted, prompting intervention from security agencies.
“Following advice from security operatives and to prevent further loss of lives and property, the Vice Chancellor, after due consultation with the management, has decided on behalf of the Senate that the university—both campuses—be closed indefinitely,” the statement read.
Students have been directed to vacate the premises by 12 noon on Thursday, February 20.
The protests, led by Students’ Union President, Comrade Benjamin Olorunfemi Timothy, escalated after students threatened to block the major highway near the campus to prevent further accidents.
The situation remains tense as students demand improved road safety measures around the university area.
