A Federal High Court in Abuja has exonerated former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Jibrin Usman (rtd.), alongside three others, of allegations of embezzlement and abuse of office brought against them by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The case, which originated from a whistleblower petition dated December 11, 2020, accused Usman of using associates to acquire illicit wealth, including properties and vehicles. However, the prosecution failed to establish any link between him and the alleged transactions.
In a statement issued in Abuja by his media aide, Emmanuel Odekina Iyede, it was confirmed that Justice Inyang Ekwo cleared Usman, retired Brigadier General Ishaya Gamgum Bauka, and two others of all allegations, leaving only one defendant, Adamu Imam, to face trial.
During Monday’s proceedings, Adamu was arraigned on a three-count charge to which he pleaded not guilty. Justice Ekwo granted him bail under strict conditions, including a ₦30 million bond, a surety with property of equal value in Abuja, and travel restrictions.
This ruling effectively restores Usman’s reputation after years of legal battles. The Bureau News recalls that in May 2024, Justice Ekwo had issued a bench warrant for Usman’s arrest over the same allegations.
