EU Imposes Fresh Sanctions on Russia, Targets Aluminium and Oil Sectors

The European Union has introduced a new wave of sanctions against Russia, reaffirming its commitment to increasing economic pressure on Moscow despite ongoing US-led diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

The 16th sanctions package, set to be formally adopted by EU foreign ministers on Monday, coinciding with the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, aims at crippling key sectors of Russia’s economy.

This latest round of sanctions will impact Russia’s aluminium industry, oil exports, and financial sector, including 13 additional banks and 73 shadow fleet tankers allegedly used by Moscow to bypass restrictions on crude oil exports. Additionally, the EU has introduced a phased ban on the import of certain Russian aluminium products.

The move comes as former U.S. President Donald Trump stirred controversy by suggesting that the war could have been resolved much earlier, stating that a “half-baked negotiator” could have brokered peace without significant territorial losses or destruction.

Despite diplomatic talks, the EU remains firm in its stance, vowing to tighten economic restrictions until Moscow ceases its military actions in Ukraine.
