Security operatives in Kano State on Friday morning reportedly blocked the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, from attending a royal ceremony in Bichi Local Government Area. The event was to mark the presentation of the staff of office to the newly appointed District Head of Bichi.

Palace on Lockdown

According to reports by News Point Nigeria, heavily armed security personnel surrounded the Kano Emir’s Palace, restricting movement and preventing the Emir from leaving his residence. Armored personnel carrier (APC) vehicles were stationed at the palace gates, further emphasizing the lockdown.

A source within the Kano Emirate Council revealed that Emir Sanusi II had been preparing to attend the ceremony but was instructed to remain indoors by security operatives.

“The Emir has been on the phone, trying to understand the situation,” the source said.

State Government Delegation Barred

A source within the Kano State Government disclosed that Governor Abba Kabir Yusif had sent a delegation to the Emir’s Palace to resolve the situation. However, they were also denied entry by the security forces.

The venue of the Bichi event itself was similarly cordoned off, preventing the ceremony from proceeding as planned.

Speculations and Tensions

This development has raised questions about the relationship between the Kano State government and the Emirate. While no official statement has been made by either party, the incident highlights ongoing political and traditional tensions in the region.

Observers await clarification on the rationale behind the deployment of security operatives and the decision to block Emir Sanusi II from fulfilling his royal duties.

This marks another controversial moment in the storied history of the Kano Emirate, with significant implications for the traditional institution and governance in the state.
