Abuja, Nigeria – April 10, 2025 – A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has accused former President Muhammadu Buhari of covertly working against the emergence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as his successor.
In a recent interview, Galadima alleged that Buhari took deliberate steps to prevent Tinubu from ascending to the presidency, including manipulating party structures within the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to him, Buhari even initiated moves to alter the APC constitution to sideline certain party figures from positions of influence.
“One of Buhari’s moves was to cause the formation of a subcommittee to amend the APC constitution so that individuals like me, who served as secretaries during the merger process of CPC, ACN, and others, would no longer have roles within the Board of Trustees (BOT) or the National Working Committee (NWC),” Galadima claimed.
He further stated that Buhari appointed then-APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu, to head the constitution review committee. However, Tinubu, recognizing the intent behind the maneuver, reportedly stalled the process.
“As I speak to you, the committee has not met, has not submitted any report, and no constitutional amendment has been made,” Galadima said. “That is part of the reason Buhari never wanted Tinubu to be president – because he refused to remove me from the structure.”
Galadima claimed that the APC BOT has not convened in the last 12 years, while the NWC met only two or three times during Buhari’s administration.
When asked directly if Buhari truly worked to prevent Tinubu’s emergence, Galadima responded emphatically: “Is there anybody who doesn’t know? Tinubu himself knows. But being magnanimous and statesmanlike, he has chosen not to speak publicly about it.”
The remarks come amid ongoing political tensions and internal reflections within Nigeria’s ruling party, as stakeholders continue to evaluate the power dynamics leading up to the 2023 presidential elections.
