Gunmen Attack Three Communities in Benue’s Otukpo LGA

Suspected armed herdsmen have reportedly launched attacks on three communities in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State. The affected villages are Okpomaju, Odudaje, and Asa 2.

According to a local source, the gunmen, operating in multiple groups, invaded the communities on Wednesday evening, firing sporadically as residents fled into the forest for safety.

“Currently, three villages in Otukpo, including mine, are under attack by Fulani herders. They launched multiple attacks yesterday (Tuesday) and came back this evening. While most people have fled, some of us are still here to repel these attacks on our communities.”

“Let the world be aware that I died fighting for my community if you don’t get any update from me again; they are shooting at us now,” a resident told SaharaReporters.

Escalating Attacks in Benue

Benue State has suffered repeated attacks from suspected herdsmen over the years, leading to thousands of deaths and mass displacement of residents. The renewed attacks add to the long-standing security crisis in the region.

Police React to Reports

When contacted, SP Anene Sewuese, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, said he was not aware of the attack but promised to make inquiries into the situation.

As of now, the extent of casualties and destruction remains unclear. The affected communities are calling on the state and federal governments to deploy security forces to contain the situation and prevent further bloodshed.
