The Nigerian military has recently completed a withdrawal of its personnel from the Okuama community in Ughelli South local government area of Delta State, according to sources from Platinum Times Nigeria.

Residents of neighboring communities, Akugbene and Okoloba in Bomadi Local Government Area, reported that the soldiers left Okuama abruptly on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, without prior notification.

This military deployment was originally in response to the tragic incident where 17 soldiers were killed by individuals suspected to be from the Okuama community. The soldiers, from the 181 Amphibious Battalion, were reportedly on a peacekeeping mission in the area when they were attacked.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters, detailed the events leading to the unfortunate fatalities: “The unfortunate incident occurred when the troops responded to a distress call after the communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities both in Delta State. The reinforcement team led by the Commanding officer was also attacked, leading to the death of the Commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 Soldiers.”

He further added, “The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa has directed the immediate investigation and arrest of those involved in the heinous crime. The occurrence has been reported to the Delta State Government.”

General Gusau affirmed the military’s ongoing commitment to its primary role of ensuring national peace and security, stating, “However, the military remains focused and committed to its mandate of maintaining peace and security in the country.”

As the investigation continues, a few arrests have already been made as authorities work to uncover the motives behind the attack. Meanwhile, the community and the nation await further developments.
