…Urge Governor Fubara to Uphold Court’s Decision
The Arewa Youths for Peaceful Coexistence has hailed the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the political crisis in Rivers State, describing it as a victory for democracy and the rule of law.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the National President of the group, Bature Haruna, commended the February 28 judgment, which:
- Nullified the state’s local government elections
- Affirmed the legitimacy of the 27 lawmakers led by Martin Amaewhule
- Reserved its ruling on their defection case
Haruna emphasized that the ruling reaffirmed constitutional governance, condemning the legislative actions of the four-man Assembly, including budget approvals and appointments, as invalid.
Call for Democratic Governance in Rivers
The group called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to respect the Supreme Court’s verdict and restore democratic governance in Rivers State.
“No democracy can survive on illegality,” Haruna stated, warning against any attempt to undermine the ruling or suppress duly elected representatives.
The Arewa Youths also praised the judiciary for upholding constitutional principles and urged civil society groups and political stakeholders to support the full implementation of the judgment.
“This is not just a victory for Rivers State but for democracy in Nigeria,” the group affirmed.
Nigerians Urged to Remain Vigilant
Also speaking, Mr. Mark Okpanachi Ogah, the FCT Chapter Coordinator of the group, urged Nigerians to remain vigilant in protecting the country’s democratic system.
The Supreme Court’s decision is expected to have far-reaching consequences on the political landscape of Rivers State as stakeholders await further legal developments.
