There are growing fears that Mr. Nelson Adepoyigi, the Ward 5 Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, may have been killed by his abductors despite efforts to secure his release.
Sources reveal that two individuals who delivered a ransom of ₦5 million to the kidnappers have returned safely, but without Mr. Adepoyigi. Shockingly, the abductors reportedly informed the couriers that the APC official had already been shot dead before the ransom reached them.
While uncertainty surrounds the grim report, Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olutokunbo Afolabi, told journalists that security agencies have not yet confirmed Adepoyigi’s death. However, he disclosed that a special tactical team has been dispatched to Ifon, where the ransom handover allegedly occurred.
A respected Ifon community leader, speaking under anonymity, confirmed the return of the ransom bearers but expressed concern that Adepoyigi’s remains had yet to be recovered from the forest where the exchange was made.
“It is a painful moment for all of us. The situation remains tense as we await confirmation,” he said.
The Chairman of Ose Local Government, Mr. Clement Ojo, described the incident as “a heartbreaking tragedy that has plunged the community into mourning.”
The kidnapping and possible murder of a local political figure underscores the growing insecurity in parts of Ondo State and the dangers faced by even grassroots political leaders.
