Senate President Godswill Akpabio has indicated that some of the demonstrations happening across the country, driven by the escalating cost of living, might be financially backed. These demonstrations have sprung up in various regions, including a recent one in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, as well as in Niger, Kano, and Sokoto states, where people are voicing their grievances over the economic difficulties.
The financial strain on Nigerians has intensified following President Bola Tinubu’s decision to stop petrol subsidies and standardize the exchange rate in 2023, leading to a sharp increase in inflation.
During a session in the Senate on Tuesday, Akpabio commented on the protests, suggesting that the demonstrators might not fully grasp the extent of the efforts the Senate and the federal government are making to address the crisis.
He remarked that many of the protests seem to be organized with financial support, and he believes that these protesters are likely unaware of the significant measures being taken by the Senate in collaboration with the federal government to mitigate the situation.
Akpabio also highlighted that, according to unconfirmed reports, state governments have recently received an additional N30 billion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), on top of their usual allocations from the federation account. This extra funding is intended to help alleviate the food crisis.
He stressed the importance of state governments using these additional funds effectively to ensure food availability for their populations.
Furthermore, Akpabio assured that the national assembly is committed to approving only measures that would benefit the citizens, underscoring their dedication to serving the public interest amidst the economic challenges.
