In a decisive move to combat drug abuse, the Kogi State Government, led by Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has publicly destroyed 25 tons of illicit drugs seized by the state command of the agency.
The destruction exercise, which took place beside Confluence Beach Hotel, Ganaja, Lokoja, underscores the state’s commitment to eradicating drug trafficking and abuse. Representing the Governor, the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Duro Omodara (Rtd.), reiterated the administration’s resolve to keep Kogi State drug-free, emphasizing the dangers of substance abuse on individuals and society.
Governor Ododo has also vowed to eliminate cannabis cultivation in four Local Government Areas of the state known for the illicit activity, pledging to work closely with the NDLEA to dismantle drug farms and tackle narcotics distribution networks.
Speaking at the event, NDLEA Chairman and CEO, Brigadier General Muhammed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), represented by Alhaji Suleiman Ahmed Nigi, stressed the severe impact of drug abuse on national security and public health. He highlighted that 14.3 million Nigerians aged 15-64 engage in drug abuse, with 10.6 million consuming cannabis—making Nigeria one of the countries with the highest cannabis abuse rates globally.
The destroyed substances included Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol, Rohypnol, Diazepam, and other narcotics. Commander of Narcotics, U.M. Yahoza, praised Governor Ododo’s unwavering commitment to tackling the drug menace, revealing that over 24 vehicles linked to drug dealers had been confiscated.
Hon. Treasure Eunice Achimugu, Special Adviser to the Governor on War Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, commended the administration’s dedication to curbing drug cartels and traffickers, noting that the Governor’s stance reflects his deep concern for the welfare of Kogi residents.
As Kogi State strengthens its partnership with the NDLEA, the government assures residents of sustained efforts to rid the state of illicit substances, ensuring a safer and healthier environment for all.
