In response to the alarming rise in fuel tanker accidents across Nigeria, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) has introduced a mandatory requirement for all vehicles transporting flammable substances to be fitted with Anti-Spill Locks. This safety measure aims to prevent fuel spillage during accidents, reducing the risk of deadly explosions and fire outbreaks.
New Safety Directive for Fuel Tankers
The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Mr. Jaji Abdulganiyu, announced the directive while inaugurating a six-week training course for Chief Superintendents of Fire in Sheda, Abuja.
Mr. Abdulganiyu emphasized that most fire incidents are preventable and stressed the urgent need for fuel tankers to be equipped with safety mechanisms to mitigate the dangers associated with fuel transportation.
“We have engaged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to explore practical solutions to the recurring challenges of fuel tanker safety,” he revealed, highlighting the government’s multi-agency approach to tackling the crisis.
Enhancing Fire Safety Through Training
Beyond enforcing stricter safety regulations, the FFS is also investing in personnel training to improve emergency response and fire prevention strategies. Mr. Abdulganiyu disclosed that:
- Over 325 fire officers have undergone specialized training since the initiative began one and a half years ago.
- Continuous training and retraining of fire officers remain a key focus under his leadership, aimed at enhancing professionalism and strengthening fire management capabilities.
A Step Towards Safer Fuel Transportation
Fuel tanker accidents have led to numerous fatalities and property destruction in recent years, underscoring the urgent need for stricter safety measures and public awareness. This new directive is expected to reduce the frequency of tanker explosions, protect lives, and improve overall road and fire safety across Nigeria.
As enforcement begins, stakeholders in the petroleum and transport sectors will need to comply with the new safety standards to avoid penalties and ensure safer fuel transportation nationwide.
