Data from the Federation of Turkish Women’s Associations has revealed that no fewer than 420 women were killed by men in Türkiye in 2024, mostly by someone they knew and within their own homes.
According to the data, 228 of these women were killed with firearms and 88 with cutting tools, Cyprus News247 reports.
It was reported that of the 420 murders, 159 were committed by family members, while 101 of the killed women were in the process of divorce or separation.
According to the data, the deaths of 344 women in 2024 were recorded as suspicious, while in 2023, 438 women were killed.
The President of the Federation of Women’s Associations of Turkey, Canan Güllü, said that 19 women were murdered in their homes in 2024.
She emphasised, “The fact that 19 women were killed in what should be the safest place, their own homes, highlights the severity of the situation.”
Güllü noted that women feel unsafe, adding, “A serious effort is needed to ensure women’s right to life in Turkey.”
She also suggested, “We can all implement policies that stop making excuses for these murders and address the root causes behind them.”
In August, Elif Durmaz was stabbed 30 times by her husband, who she had been seeking a divorce from, in Konya.
Afterward, the murderer brought Durmaz’s body to the police station. During his trial, he received reductions in his sentence for “unjust provocation” and “good conduct,” which resulted in his aggravated life sentence being reduced to 17 years.
In December, Eda Kuş was killed by her lover in Izmir, and her killer also brought her body to the police station.
The same month, Gonca Özdemir sent her friend a message saying, “I am waiting for him to kill me now.”
She was murdered by her husband in Sivas.
Elif, Eda, Gonca while names and locations may change, the tragedies remain the same, the report stated.
