As Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election draws closer, signs of major political realignments are emerging in the North, with support groups that backed Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 election switching allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, received the defectors in Abuja, marking a significant boost for the party ahead of the next election cycle.
Why the Groups Dumped Atiku for APC
The Coalition of Atiku Support Groups in the 19 Northern States formally announced their defection at an event held at the A-Class Event Centre, Abuja.
Representatives from each of the 19 Northern States and the FCT attended the ceremony, pledging to mobilize grassroots support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Hon. Abubakar Malami explained the decision, stating:
“Our groups represent a diverse cross-section of society—women, youths, students, traders, academics, and farmers. We worked tirelessly in 2023 to campaign for Atiku Abubakar. However, after carefully assessing the current political landscape, we have decided to align with the APC to support President Tinubu’s administration.”
He specifically praised Senator Barau Jibrin for his role in encouraging the defection, acknowledging his commitment to addressing the challenges of the North.
“In 2027, we will work for the continuation of President Tinubu’s administration. We appreciate Senator (Dr.) Barau Jibrin for his dedication to the development of our region and the country at large.”
APC Leaders React to the Defection
Welcoming the defectors, Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, described the move as a “big catch” for the ruling party.
“It is good that you are teaming up with Mr. President to ensure the success of his administration. This is a significant development, and we are delighted to have you join the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu family.”
On his part, APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, hailed Senator Barau Jibrin for facilitating the defection, describing him as a “real general” in the political landscape.
With this mass defection, the APC appears to be strengthening its foothold in the North, positioning itself for a stronger electoral performance in the 2027 presidential election.
