Aisha Yesufu Calls Seun Kuti a Product of Fela’s Indiscipline Amidst Social Media Feud

Aisha Yesufu, the convener of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, has expressed her views on popular Nigerian singer Seun Kuti, describing him as a product of what she terms “Fela’s indiscipline.” This comment comes in the wake of Seun’s recent remarks regarding Yesufu’s advocacy for women’s freedom in Nigeria.

The disagreement arose when Seun Kuti challenged Yesufu’s stance on women’s liberation, stating, “liberate yourself from your Hijab first.” In response, Yesufu took to her X handle to address Seun’s comments, suggesting that he was seeking attention by referencing her name.

“Yesufu remarked, “Seun Kuti wants to trend with my name as his karaoke business no make him blow alongside those wey dey do music. I don’t blame him! If only his father had discipline over his loin, we wouldn’t be dealing with the consequences of that lack of discipline!”

She further critiqued Seun’s career, suggesting that his performances are merely an attempt to imitate his late father, the iconic Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti. “Person wey people dey book im show because dem wan see a caricature of his father even if they can’t have the real thing,” she added.

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of Fela Kuti, a figure renowned for his influence on Afrobeat music and his activism. The exchange between Yesufu and Kuti highlights the ongoing discourse surrounding women’s rights and the role of cultural legacy in contemporary Nigerian society.
