“You Shouldn’t Have Started It” – Trump Blames Ukraine for Unending War

Trump Blames Ukraine for War, Faces Global Backlash

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has ignited controversy once again after blaming Ukraine for the ongoing war with Russia during a speech in Florida. Addressing thousands of supporters at a rally, Trump pointed fingers at Ukraine’s leadership, stating, “You shouldn’t have started it.”

His remarks sparked immediate condemnation both in the U.S. and internationally, with critics accusing him of aligning with Russian President Vladimir Putin while undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty. Trump argued that Ukraine’s push for closer ties with NATO and the European Union had provoked Russia, claiming that these moves “backed Russia into a corner.” He further insisted that the war could have been avoided if Ukraine had respected Russia’s sphere of influence, adding, “Russia had no choice. Ukraine kept poking the bear.”

His statements were swiftly rejected by U.S. officials, who reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine and condemned Russia’s invasion as an unjustified act of aggression.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also responded, dismissing Trump’s claims. “Ukraine did not start this war. Russia invaded our land, killed our people, and tried to erase our independence,” he asserted.

European leaders voiced similar concerns, warning that Trump’s rhetoric could embolden Russia and weaken Western unity. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz criticized the comments as “dangerous and misleading,” while French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed that Ukraine had every right to defend itself.

Despite the widespread backlash, Trump’s comments found support among a segment of his base that is increasingly skeptical of U.S. financial aid to Ukraine. He capitalized on this sentiment, promising that if re-elected, he would end the war within 24 hours by forcing Ukraine into negotiations with Russia—regardless of the terms.
