Ex-Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Ordered to Kuje Custody Amid N110 Billion Fraud Case
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has ordered the remand of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello at Kuje Correctional Centre until January 29, 2025.
The court, presided over by Justice Maryanne Anenih, also adjourned Bello’s trial to February 25, 2025. The ruling followed the rejection of the ex-governor’s bail application due to procedural irregularities. Justice Anenih deemed the application premature, as it was filed before Bello’s formal appearance in court or detention.
EFCC’s Case Against Yahaya Bello
Bello and two co-defendants are facing charges in case number CR/7781, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges include conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and unlawful possession of property tied to an alleged N110 billion money laundering scheme.
The EFCC alleges that the former governor misappropriated state funds to acquire high-value properties in Abuja:
- No. 35 Danube Street, Maitama District (valued at N950 million)
- No. 1160 Cadastral Zone C03, Gwarimpa II District (valued at N100 million)
- No. 2 Justice Chukwudifu Oputa Street, Asokoro (valued at N920 million)
Ongoing Detention and Legal Battle
Yahaya Bello has remained in detention since November 25, 2024. The EFCC’s charges mark a significant development in the fight against corruption, drawing nationwide attention to the case.
Bello’s legal team has expressed intent to reapply for bail, while the prosecution insists on the gravity of the charges and the need to ensure accountability.
