Yahaya Bello: Court Reschedules Date as Ex-Governor Fails to Appear

Federal High Court Reschedules Arraignment of Ex-Governor Yahaya Bello to June 27

by Ohepo Ohepo

Abuja, May 2024 – The Federal High Court in Abuja has rescheduled the arraignment of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to Thursday, June 27. This new date follows the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) suit against Bello on allegations of money laundering.

Background of the Case

The EFCC has accused Yahaya Bello of involvement in a substantial money laundering scheme, prompting legal action against the former governor. Initially, the arraignment was set for June 13. However, unforeseen changes have led to the postponement.

Court Proceedings

During the resumed hearing on Thursday, Bello’s counsel, Adeola Adedipe, SAN, expressed surprise upon learning that EFCC lawyer Rotimi Oyedepo appeared in court. Adedipe explained that the EFCC had previously informed Aliyu AbdulWahab, SAN, the defendant’s counsel, that the June 13 date was inconvenient for them. AbdulWahab, accommodating the EFCC’s request, agreed to a new date for the proceedings.

The court acknowledged the communication between the legal teams and officially moved the arraignment to June 27, providing both parties with adequate preparation time.

Legal Implications

The upcoming arraignment will be a significant step in the legal process concerning the allegations against Yahaya Bello. The EFCC has maintained that the former governor must answer to the charges brought against him to uphold justice and accountability.

The Federal High Court’s decision to reschedule the arraignment emphasizes the need for due process and coordination between legal teams. As the new date approaches, all eyes will be on the proceedings to see how the case against the former governor unfolds.
