Wike Announces Free Two-Month Operation of Abuja Light Rail

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced that the Abuja Light Rail will operate free of charge for two months following its commissioning on Monday, May 27, 2024. This announcement was made during the ongoing Ministerial Sectoral Update at the Radio House in Abuja, marking the first year in office of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Minister Wike revealed that President Bola Tinubu will officially commission the Metro rail project for commercial activities on Monday. He encouraged residents to start using the Metro rails from Tuesday, May 28, emphasizing that the initiative aims to ease commuting for Abuja residents. Additionally, Wike hinted that the President might extend the free train rides for up to six months.

In his address, Wike also disclosed plans for the Federal Capital Territory Administration to commence the construction of 10,000 affordable housing units under the project named Renewed Hope City, starting in the coming year, 2025.

The Minister of Youth Development, Jamilo Bio Ibrahim, and the Minister of Transportation, Sa’Idu Ahmed Alkali, are also scheduled to deliver briefings today as part of the sectoral updates.
