Why I Didn’t Sack Ex-CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele – Buhari

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed why he did not remove the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, amidst speculations of Emefiele’s interest in the 2023 presidency.

Buhari cited that Emefiele never discussed his potential candidacy with him, and without concrete evidence against him, it would have been unfair and unjust to remove him based on hearsay.

Buhari shared this insight in a memoir titled “Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015 – 2023),” authored by his former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina. The book was officially presented in Abuja on Tuesday.

The former president emphasized the importance of fairness in decision-making, expressing concern about the morale of those serving with him. He underscored the need for evidence before taking punitive action, noting that unjust actions could have lasting consequences on individuals.

Buhari also mentioned that when Emefiele was linked to the 2023 presidential campaign, the CBN governor did not discuss it with him. He asserted that if Emefiele had communicated his intentions, he would have considered removing him and providing a transparent explanation to the nation.
