We Will Arrest Netanyahu If He Enters Our Territory – UK Government

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could face arrest in the UK after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his alleged involvement in war crimes in Gaza. Downing Street has confirmed that the UK would fulfill its legal obligations under the International Criminal Court Act 2001, which mandates compliance with ICC warrants.

The arrest warrant, also issued for Israel’s former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, places all ICC member states, including the UK, under an obligation to act. The UK government refrained from directly addressing whether Netanyahu would be detained but stated it adheres to legal and international commitments.

Legal Framework

Under the International Criminal Court Act 2001, the procedure requires:

  1. A minister to transmit the ICC’s request to the judiciary.
  2. A judicial officer to endorse the warrant if deemed valid.
  3. UK courts to determine the final outcome of an arrest and extradition process.

The prime minister’s spokesman underscored the government’s respect for the ICC’s independence, emphasizing the importance of legal due process.

Global and Domestic Reactions

The warrants have drawn mixed reactions globally:

  • United States: President Joe Biden called the ICC’s action “outrageous” and defended Israel, stating there is “no equivalence” between Hamas and the Israeli government.
  • France: French officials recognized the ICC’s independence but refrained from equating the actions of Israel and Hamas.
  • UK Opposition: Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel criticized the ICC, urging the UK government to challenge its decision, describing it as “provocative.”

Israel has dismissed the ICC’s actions, with Netanyahu denouncing the warrants as “antisemitic.” Hamas welcomed the charges against Israeli leaders but did not address the warrant issued for their military commander Mohammed Deif.

Implications for UK-Israel Relations

Despite the legal and diplomatic controversy, Downing Street reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining dialogue with Israel, describing the country as a key ally. However, the ICC’s actions may complicate future engagements between the UK and Israel’s leadership.

The warrants have sparked a broader debate about international justice, accountability, and the ICC’s role in addressing allegations of war crimes amid ongoing conflicts.
