Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed disappointment over his recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, describing it as “regrettable.” However, he affirmed Ukraine’s readiness to negotiate peace under Trump’s leadership.
The Bureau Newspaper gathered that in a statement posted on social media, Zelenskyy acknowledged that last week’s White House meeting “did not go the way it was supposed to be” but stressed the urgency of setting things right. “My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts,” he stated.
Zelenskyy further outlined a proposed roadmap for de-escalation, which includes an immediate cessation of missile strikes, long-range drone attacks, and bombardments of civilian infrastructure. He indicated Ukraine’s willingness to initiate a truce in the air and at sea—provided Russia reciprocates. “We are ready to work fast to end the war,” he asserted, emphasizing the need for the U.S. to play a pivotal role in securing a lasting peace deal.
The Bureau Newspaper also gathered that Zelenskyy’s remarks come amid heightened tensions following Trump’s decision to pause all military aid to Ukraine. A senior Trump administration official confirmed to Fox News that “all military assistance will remain on hold until Ukrainian leaders demonstrate a genuine commitment to peace talks.” This move signals a major shift in U.S. policy toward Ukraine, aligning with Trump’s long-standing skepticism of continued American involvement in the conflict.
Zelenskyy, in a bid to reassure Washington, acknowledged the critical role the U.S. has played in Ukraine’s defense. He specifically credited Trump for supplying Ukraine with Javelin missiles during his first term, marking a significant boost in Kyiv’s military capabilities. “We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence,” he wrote.
The Bureau Newspaper learned that European leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, recently proposed a 30-day moratorium on air and sea strikes, as well as attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as a preliminary step toward peace. Macron suggested that this ceasefire period could create the conditions necessary for broader negotiations. However, the Trump administration has yet to respond to the proposal.
Zelenskyy also expressed Ukraine’s readiness to sign agreements on minerals and security, seeing them as essential steps toward long-term stability. He concluded by calling for a more constructive approach in future diplomatic engagements, underscoring the need to rebuild trust between Washington and Kyiv.
