Wales Elects Its First Black Leader

With 51.7% of the vote, Vaughan Gething narrowly won the Welsh Labour leadership election, securing his position as Wales’ future first minister.

Mr. Gething defeated his opponent Jeremy Miles, who received 48.3%, to become the first Black person to rule Wales.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer praised him.

However, Plaid Cymru has “deep concerns” about donations from a contentious Cardiff garbage company.

News reports concerning £200,000 in funding from Dauson Environmental Group, which is controlled by a guy who has been prosecuted twice for environmental offenses, tainted Mr. Gething’s campaign.

Julie James, a minister in the Welsh government and a supporter of Miles, demanded an examination of the future procedures for running leadership bids.
