The political crisis in Rivers State has taken a dramatic turn as former Governor Nyesom Wike lashed out at his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, over what he described as a gross violation of constitutional procedures.

Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), condemned Fubara’s decision to present the 2024 budget to only three members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, calling it a clear disregard for democratic principles.

“This is an impeachable offense,” Wike declared, insisting that the governor’s actions undermine the legitimacy of the legislative process. According to him, the state assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, remains the legally recognized legislature, and any attempt to bypass them is a direct affront to the rule of law.

The Supreme Court had earlier affirmed that Amaewhule and 25 other lawmakers are the authentic members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, instructing them to resume legislative duties without interference.

With Wike’s latest remarks, the battle for political control in Rivers State is intensifying, and all eyes are now on the next moves of both factions. Will the lawmakers heed Wike’s call for impeachment, or will Fubara stand his ground? The coming days will be crucial in determining the future of the state’s leadership.
