Unbearable Heat: National Grid Collapses Again

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has communicated to its patrons via social media platforms, acknowledging a significant disruption in power supply.

According to the AEDC, a substantial failure in the national grid occurred around 4:28 pm, resulting in widespread power outages.

The company issued a statement saying, “To our esteemed customers, we wish to notify you that the ongoing power disruption stems from a collapse in the national grid system. This incident took place approximately at 16:28 hours on March 28, 2024, leading to the current lack of electricity within our service territory.

“We request your patience and understanding as relevant parties are diligently working towards reinstating the regular electricity supply,” remarked the Abuja DisCo.

Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company conveyed to its customers, “To our esteemed customer, we wish to inform you of a grid system collapse at 16:28hrs, resulting in a cessation of electricity across our operational areas.

“We are collaborating closely with our technical partners, aiming for a prompt restoration of the grid. Updates will be provided as we make progress in restoring electricity. We appreciate your patience during this time.”

Reports from The Bureau Newspaper indicate that this isn’t the first instance of grid failure, with a notable collapse occurring on February 4.

It’s worth mentioning that The Bureau Newspaper had previously reported a significant grid failure on December 12, 2023, which saw a drastic reduction in power generation capacity from 4,032.8MW to a mere 43.5MW the day before.

Data from TCN highlighted a slight recovery in power generation to 115.4MW by 3 pm on December 11, 2023, which further improved to 240.9MW by around 4 pm.

An analysis by the International Energy Agency reveals that Nigeria’s national power grid experienced 46 collapses between 2017 and 2023. The year 2023 was particularly challenging for Nigerians due to frequent nationwide power outages, notably on September 14, following a fire incident on a key transmission line, as highlighted in the report.
