Two Witches Arrested for Allegedly Plotting to Curse President

Zambian Police Arrest Two for Alleged Plot to Harm President Using Witchcraft

Two individuals have been arrested in Zambia for allegedly plotting to harm President Hakainde Hichilema through the use of witchcraft, according to a statement issued by police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga on Friday.

Suspects and Allegations

The suspects, identified as Jasten Mabulesse Candunde (42) and Leonard Phiri (43), were reportedly hired by Nelson Banda, the younger brother of fugitive lawmaker Jay Banda. Nelson Banda allegedly contracted the duo to use charms in a scheme targeting the President.

Jay Banda, who has been on the run since escaping police custody in August 2024 while facing charges of aggravated robbery, remains at large.

Charges and Seizures

The suspects face charges of:

  • Practicing witchcraft
  • Possession of charms
  • Cruelty to animals

During their arrest, the police recovered various charms, including a live chameleon, which was allegedly intended for use in their purported witchcraft rituals.

Hamoonga revealed that the suspects admitted they had agreed to receive a total payment of $7,400 for their mission.

Official Statement

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga stated:

“The suspects were found in possession of assorted charms, including a live chameleon, and are alleged to be practicing witchdoctors. Their purported mission was to use charms to harm the Head of State, His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema.”

Broader Implications

This incident underscores ongoing challenges in Zambia related to beliefs in witchcraft and its intersection with politics. The authorities are continuing their investigations while the fugitive Jay Banda remains a focus of their efforts.

President Hichilema, who has been vocal about governance reforms and strengthening Zambia’s rule of law, has yet to comment publicly on the incident.
