ABUJA — Tensions are rising among several ministers amid indications of an impending cabinet reshuffle by President Bola Tinubu, sparking concern over their future roles in the administration.
The apprehension stems from comments made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who recently suggested that a reshuffle could take place soon. Onanuga hinted that ministers who are not seen as actively contributing to the President’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” could be removed.
Criticism has been mounting regarding the current composition of the cabinet, with claims that many ministers were appointed based on political patronage rather than merit. Prior to the announcement of Tinubu’s cabinet, there were high expectations that the majority of appointments would favor technocrats. However, many political appointees currently hold key positions.
According to sources close to the Presidency, Mrs. Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination and head of the Central Delivery Coordination Unit, has compiled a performance evaluation of the ministers. Mrs. Usman, who previously served as Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, is known for her no-nonsense approach and has reportedly resisted attempts by some ministers to influence her assessment.
A source familiar with the process stated, “Some of the ministers are jittery and have tried to lobby her, but she is not someone to be manipulated. She is thorough and dedicated.”
The reshuffle is expected to bring in fresh hands to drive the President’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.” The source added, “The President is going to rejig his cabinet to bring fresh hands that will help translate his Renewed Hope Agenda into a complete reality.”
On Monday, President Tinubu held a lengthy meeting with Mrs. Usman in his Aso Rock office, further fueling speculation about the imminent reshuffle. In addition, Zaccheus Adedeji, Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Special Adviser to the President on Revenue, along with Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, were seen in the Presidential Villa.
Earlier in the day, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, were also present at the President’s office.
A source confirmed that a cabinet reshuffle could be announced before the end of the week. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting scheduled for Wednesday may serve as a valedictory session for some ministers unless the President opts to delay the announcement.
