Federal Ministry of Education Successfully Reintegrates Over Four Million Out-of-School Children in One Year
Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant achievement, the Nigerian government has successfully reintegrated over four million out-of-school children into formal education within the past year. This milestone was announced by the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, during a media briefing titled ‘Transformative Journey,’ marking his first year in office.
Professor Mamman detailed the progress made through the ministry’s DOTS Policy, which focuses on Data Repository, Out-of-School Education, Teacher Training and Development, Skills Acquisition, and Development Programs. The policy has been instrumental in addressing the educational crisis encountered upon his assumption of office.
The minister highlighted that this initiative involved five agencies under the Federal Ministry of Education. The effort has not only facilitated the return of 4,028,000 children to basic and Arabic literacy programs but also included 200,500 learners with disabilities. Recent efforts have seen over 20,000 children registered in Abuja alone, with similar initiatives being rolled out nationwide. For those beyond traditional school age, the focus has shifted to skill development to ensure continued personal and professional growth.
Looking forward, Professor Mamman stated that the ministry aims to continue this momentum by bringing 3 to 4 million out-of-school children back into the educational system annually over the next three years. The goal reflects a broader vision to enhance educational access and quality across the country.
In the past year, the ministry has also significantly boosted school enrolment figures from 30 million to 55 million. Additionally, over 85,662 teaching and non-teaching staff across various institutions have received training. In the basic and senior secondary education sectors, more than 40,000 facilities have been established through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), contributing to a better learning environment.
In the tertiary education sector, Professor Mamman reported the provision of over 6,500 facilities, including laboratories, faculty buildings, and auditoriums, primarily through TETFUND. Scholarships totaling 759,000 have been awarded, both internally and externally, to alleviate financial burdens on students and their families. The Student Loan Scheme, managed by NELFUND, has disbursed 3 billion naira to support students’ educational pursuits.
The ministry has also made significant strides in supporting Nigerian scholars under the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA), with payments for allowances being processed. The introduction of the Transnational Education (TNE) system offers Nigerian students access to world-class education at reduced costs, with opportunities for foreign investment in Nigerian education.
Emphasizing the role of technology in education, Professor Mamman noted the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence and other technological advancements. The focus on technical education from primary to tertiary levels aims to equip students with practical skills for the labor market. Technical Colleges, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education are being strengthened to meet these objectives.
Additionally, the ministry has reinforced Safe School standards, including the establishment of a rapid response team, installation of CCTV systems, and increased security measures in schools. Curriculum reviews and policy streamlining for distance learning have also been implemented to ensure educational resilience and relevance.
Professor Mamman expressed confidence that Nigeria’s education system is on the path to comprehensive transformation, bolstered by the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the dedicated efforts of the ministry’s staff.
