In a tragic turn of events, Olayinka Ogunyemi, a resident of Abuja, has fallen victim to banditry, losing his life despite the payment of a N23 million ransom. Daily Trust reports that Ogunyemi was among seven individuals kidnapped from the Kuduru community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The bandits initially demanded a staggering N290 million for the release of the hostages but proceeded to execute the civil engineer when their exorbitant demands were not fully met.
The grim news of Ogunyemi’s death was conveyed by the bandits themselves, who contacted the families on Friday, February 23, to inform them of the heart-wrenching development. This incident highlights the growing menace of kidnapping and banditry plaguing various parts of the country, casting a shadow of fear and uncertainty over affected communities. The loss of Ogunyemi, a civil engineer by profession, not only devastates his family and friends but also underscores the urgent need for more effective measures to combat the escalating security challenges in Nigeria.

“The bandits called us yesterday that they have killed engineer Olayinka Ogunyemi. The bandits threatened to kill the remaining captives if N230 million is not made available as ransom. Those still in captivity include one and half year-old boy, two siblings, a pregnant woman and two men.
“N23 million has been paid, food sent and other items they demanded but none of our people has been released. We are appealing to the federal government, the police and the army to step up efforts to rescue our people because their abductors said Nigeria has offended them and they would retaliate.”
