A soldier was killed when suspected terrorists assaulted a military base in Gujba town, Gujba Local Government Area, Yobe State, at midnight on Saturday, March 23.
According to DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, a spokesman for the Yobe State Police Command, who verified the attack to The PUNCH on Sunday, the accused terrorists also set fire to a military patrol vehicle.
“At this point, the attack is the only thing I can certify to you. He claimed, “Suspected terrorists were engaged by troops and CJTF, and one soldier was killed.”
The PUNCH was informed by trustworthy local sources that the suspected rebels assaulted the town at midnight, opened fire without warning, and attacked the military base. However, the army chased them out into the nearby jungle.
“They (suspected terrorists) stormed the town some minutes after midnight, shooting sporadically and majority of us took to our heels into the surrounding bushes for our dear lives,” said Gujba resident Modu Bahna, recounting his incident.
“They only attacked the two patrol vehicles in the military base where a soldier was killed,” another source, Dala Bukar, stated. “The attackers did not kill any civilian or loot food or other essential commodity stores.”
This latest military massacre follows the deaths of fifteen soldiers in Delta State amid a conflict between local communities.
Twelve troops, one captain, and two majors make up the staff.
They were reported to have died while attending to a distress call amid fighting in the state between the Okuama and Okoloba communities.
